Cyprus - Noble Prize Winner

Cyprus postal authority has issued a special stamp to mark the Cypriot Noble Prize Winner - Christopher A Pissarides. The stamp was issued quite recently - on June 8, 2011 (click - source). Dr Pissarides is Professor of Economic at the London School of Economics (LSE). He won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Eonomic Science (read Dr Pissarides homepage - here).

Singapore was the host city of the 4th World Orchid Conference under the auspices of the Malayan Orchid Society. It was at his conference that a Handbook Committee was established and authorized to create a Handbook on Orchid Nomenclature.

The First Power Project for Malaysia will assist in financing the construction of a 79,300 KW hydroelectric power station located about 100 miles north of Kuala Lumpur in the Cameron Highlands area of the Federation of Malaya. It is the first stage of a scheme to develop the power potential in a group of streams on the Cameron Highlands plateau. It will utilize the waters of the Kial, Telom, Habu and Bertram rivers and, within an overall distance of approximately 15 miles, discharge the outfall into the Batang Padang river.

The original date for the formation of Malaysia was 01 June 1963. However this was postponed to 31 August 1963 in order to align with Merdeka Day. However due to objection from neighbouring countries, the date is postponed again to 16 September 1963.

The stamp "Freedom from Hunger" for Malaya in 1963 was issued as part of a worldwide campaign by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to raise public awareness of global hunger and encourage action to solve it. As a participating country, Malaya issued these stamps to support the campaign's goal of collecting funds and coordinating efforts to combat world hunger.
