Dunhuang was one of the four provinces of the Hexi region created by Han Emperor Wu in 111 BC. The province once played an important role as a military outpost to defend the dynasty against western invaders. As the power of the dynasty weakened in the region, Dunhuang was under the rule of foreigners for some time. Dunhuang repeatedly rose and fell during its long history.

However, although rulers of the province constantly changed, Dunhuang always served as a major crossroad of the Silk Road where people of the West and East met, and the cultures they brought flourished. Buddhist culture was one of such cultures, and it culminated in the form of the famous faces and their wall paintings and Buddhist paintings.

The pen was issued in 2005 in an edition of just 408 pens, and designed after the 32m high statue of the Greek Sun God, Helios, which was erected at the entrance to the harbor of Mandraki on the island of Rhodes, guarding the safe moorings.

The pen is dedicated to the foundation of the city of Rhodes in 408 BC.

Antoni Gaudí was born in 1852 close to Tarragona (south of Barcelona). He was, and still is, one of the most famous Modernist architects in the world. The "Spirit of Gaudi" limited edition is inspired by La Pedrera, a building by Gaudí.

The building was constructed between 1906 and 1912 for the Milà family, a couple possessing a great fortune made from their business activities. That is why La Pedrera is also known as the Casa Milà. The couple wanted to locate the building in the elegant 

Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona and hired the most expensive and famous architect to do so - Antoni Gaudí.

 

The Casa Milà was the last civil commission undertaken by the artist. On the 2nd November 1984 La Pedrera was declared as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
