Edmund Hillary - Everest Dan Antartika

Bila sebut nama Edmund Hillary perkara yang kita ingat adalah dia merupakan pendaki pertama yang tiba di kemuncak Everest. Hillary berjaya tiba puncak Everest pada Mei 29, 1953 bersama Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Hillary pada ketika itu berusia 33 tahun.

Selain mendaki Everest ada satu lagi kejayaan Hillary yang mungkin tak ramai tahu. Hillary pernah mengetuai pasukan eksplorasi New Zealand ke Antartika. Hillary berjaya tiba di Antartika pada Jan 3, 1958.

HK Declared Monuments - The Bethanie

Kalau di negara kita sesuatu bangunan lama di gazet sebagai heritage building. Pengiktirafan yang diberi oleh kerajaan melalui pihak yang berwajib. Di HK keadaannya sama sesuatu bangunan lama akan diberi pengiktirafan sebagai Declared Monuments. Salah satu bangunan yang mendapat pengiktirafan tersebut adalah The Bethanie.

Located in Pokfulam, the Béthanie was built by the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Missions Etrangères de Paris) in 1875 as a sanatorium and is now a declared monument. Almost a century later, the heritage building was taken over by the Hong Kong Government and leased to the University of Hong Kong from 1978 to 1997. In March 2003, the Legislative Council approved capital works funds for The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts to restore the Béthanie and two neighbouring Dairy Farm cowsheds as its associated campus, housing training facilities for the School of Film and Television of the Academy. Siapa penulisnya Munis D Faruqui.

Garden of Eden pernah dimiliki oleh seorang berbangsa Inggeris nama Frederic Eden. Beliau membeli milikan tersebut pada 1880.

After the death of Mr. Eden in 1916, in 1927 the garden and the villa were passed to Princess Aspasia of Greece who further enriched the garden with botanical Mediterranean species. In 1919, the princess married the crown prince of Greece Alexander, who died a year later from a monkey bite; their only daughter Alessandra in 1945 married Peter II, the last king of Serbia. Aspasia lived in the palace and garden of Eden until her death in 1972.

Allenby Bridge dan John B Glubb

Mula baca buku MMM - Mullahs, Merchants and Militants yang telah dibeli lama. Bab Introduction buku dimulai dengan menyebut dua perkara Allenby Bridge dan penulis buku nama John Glubb.

Allenby Bridge sebuah jambatan yang menjadi penghubung darat Jordan dan Israel. Jambatan mengambil sempena nama Edmund Allenby, seorang jeneral pasukan tentera British yang memain peranan besar pada era WW1. Allenby memimpin pasukan tentera British merampas Palestine dari Ottoman pada 1917.

Bacaan Awal Tentang Nasr

Meminjam sebuah buku Librari Ratu 'The Essential Seyyed Hossein Nasr'. Terbitan tahun 2006 oleh World Wisdom Inc, Bloomington, Indiana.

Seyyed Hossein Nasr lahir pada 1933 di Tehran. Ayahnya bernama Seyyed Valiallah (1871-1946) pernah berkhidmat sebagai pegawai besar di Kementerian Pendidikan era pemerintahan Qajar dan Pahlavi. Seyyed Valiallah berkahwin pada usia enam puluh tahun. Seyyed Hossein adalah anak sulung dari dua beradik.

Nasr datang ke Amerika untuk belajar pada 1945. Beliau tinggal bersama saudara mara di New York. Beliau bersekolah di Peddie School, New Jersey. Kemudian belajar Fizik di MIT dan graduat pada 1954. Nasr memperolehi MA dalam Geologi dan Geofizik  dari Harvard pada 1956. Kemudian memperolehi PhD dalam Sejarah Sains dan Islamic Studies pada 1958.

Nasr pernah mendengar kuliah Bertrand Russell dan dari situ Nasr mula tertarik dengan kajian humaniti. Nasr juge menerima tarikan dari ketokohan ahli filosofi Itali, Giorgio di Santilana. Santilana pernah mengajar Nasr tentang Cante. Santilana turut mengajar Hinduism mengguna buku tulisan Rene Guenon (d.1951).

Antara nama tokoh lain yang Nasr turut temui ialah Ananda Coomaraswamy (1877 Sri Lanka - 1947 Massachusett) dan Frithjof Schuon (1907 Basel - 1988 Indiana).

Guru beliau semasa PhD adalah George Sarton, Harry Wolfson, Bernard Cohen dan HAR Gibb.

Selesai PhD pada 1958 Nasr pulang ke Iran. Beliau mengajar di Tehran University dan dilantik Professor pada 1963. Mengajar di Tehran selama dua puluh satu tahun.
