Zimbabwe Stamps - Minerals

Zimbabwe is quite well known among us but probably for the wrong reasons. When Zimbabwe is mentioned we remember its famous figure Pres. Mugabe. He is over 84 yrs old and still clinging to power. Another about Zimbabwe is that the country uses a very big currency denomination - up to the level of trillion dollars. That is really a huge amount.

One Hundred Trillion Dollars ZWD

(1000 ZWD equivalent to USD3)

On the economic front Zimbabwe is big in mining industry. It produced all kind of mining resources including gold, emerald, diamond and etc. The importance of minerals to Zimbabwe was recognized by the issuance of special stamps with mineral theme. Four types of mineral were chosen to appear on its stamp - diamond, emerald, agate and aquamarine.

Republic of Gabon stamps
Lets look more closely about the discovery of penicillin which was noted on the stamp as in the year 1921. Actually the penicillin was invented in 1928 by Sir Alexander Fleming. It was recognized as one of top ten inventions. The other discoveries which were considered as the top ten are telephone, computer, television, the automobile, cotton gin, camera, steam engine, sewing machine and light bulb.
As for the television invention it was recogized John Baird as the inventor in 1926. But of late it was recognized as well that the first telelevision image should be credited to Philo T Transworth. That was in the year of 1927. Read here and here and here for the report.

Guinea Stamp - Baardeen

A stamp of Guinea (source - click)

Guinea is a relatively small country in West Africa. News coverage on Guinea is very seldom appear in the main stream media. The most recent coverage was about the death of its President (Pres. Conte). That was late last year (somewhere near Christmas celebration 2008). The news was more about the turmoil on who are going to be the new President. That is typical for a poor country especially in Africa.

The Guinea's stamps shown below is depicting image of John Baardeen. Actually, Baardeen has no connection with Guinea what so ever. The stamp is just to honour Baardeen as he is the inventor of transistor. Baardeen died in 1991. More about Baardeen's life and achievement can be read here.

In larger image (source - click)

The stamp was issued in 2002 (probably on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his Nobel Prize).

Still on the topic of astronomy ... Two stamps are shown here - a radio telescope in Great Britain & 150th anniversary of RAS - taken from an amateur astronomer blog;

Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope (1966)

Excerpt from - click source

Britain’s first astronomy-related stamp, showing the Jodrell Bank radio telescope, was issued in 1966 as the lowest-value member of a set saluting British technology. Coloured black and what was officially described as “lemon”, it was drab, poorly reproduced, and unimpressive.

150th Anniversary of RAS (1970) - click source

Excerpt - The 150th anniversary of the Royal Astronomical Society was commemorated by one of a set of five stamps issued in April 1970 to mark various anniversaries.
Shown on the RAS stamp, but not named, are three characters who were influential in founding the society: Sir William Herschel (at left), the first President, holding his famous drawing of Uranus and two satellites; Francis Baily, of Baily’s beads fame; and John Herschel, William’s son. In the background is William Herschel’s 40-ft telescope, assembled at his home in Slough, as depicted in the RAS logo.

Estonia - Hirvepark Demo

Hirvepark Demonstration in 1987 was one of historic events in Estonia. A stamp to commemorate the 20th anniversary was issued on 23 August 2007.

In August 1987, the Estonian fight for freedom had advanced to the stage where it was possible to gather under political slogans. For the first time a meeting was held without the restricting framework of Soviet propaganda. The demonstration at Hirvepark broke the dam, so to say, and allowed the events leading to the restoration of Estonia's independence to take their course. (Source - click)

The people gathered there demanded that the secret protocols of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact be made public and annulled. The Estonian society thus took a courageous and necessary step towards regaining its independence. The Hirvepark demonstration was a product of uncompromising civil courage and rejuvenated the national spirit, leading the way towards not only political independence but also freedom of the mind. Cuba Stamp - Subway

It is amazing to see Cuba is having such a modern infra-structure. It is depicted in stamps issued in Feb 2008.

Subway in Cuba (Source - topicstamps)

But by glancing through the information on transportation system in Cuba such subway system is not likely available at the moment. May be that is what they plan to have in the future. The current status of public tranport in Cuba is not so encouraging. The Cuban public is travelling around on a kind of public bus which they called 'Camellos' - it is an old system.

Camellos in operation in (source -havanajournal)

There is a catalogue of stamps which depicted images of streetcars, subway and trolley coaches around the world prepared by an American professor (source - click here). The catalogue is quite out-of-date already. Cuban examples were available but it was dated 2004 and certainly the subway stamp was not there yet.
