Setem Malaysia 1966 - 150th Anniversary of Penang Free School

Setem kenangan sempena ulang tahun ke150 Penang Free School. Tarikh keluaran Oktober 21, 1966.

Penang Free School dibuka pada 1816. Tiga puluh tahun selepas Francis Light tiba Penang, 1786. Penubuhan PFS diusaha oleh Robert Sparke Hutchings (1781-1827).

Robert Sparke Hutchings (11 April 1781 – 20 April 1827) was an English clergyman who initiated the founding of Penang Free School. One of the oldest English-medium schools in Southeast Asia, in Penang. He was previously based in Bengal.

Kenapa nama Free School? Sebelum Penang Free School sekolah cuma menerima kemasukan murid warga Eropah dan kalangan pegawai kerajaan.

Education was available to the children of Europeans and government officials but not to the growing number of children of mainly migrant Asians and Hutchings was concerned.

Pada 1966 ada empat setem keluaran baru.

• 8 February: National Monument, Kuala Lumpur.
• 11 April: Installation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Ismail Nasiruddin Shah. 
• 21 October: 150th Anniversary of Penang Free School. 
• 1 December: First Malaysia Plan.

Malaysia’s first premier Tunku Abdul Rahman came up with the idea of the monument in 1963 after having seen the famous Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington County, Virginia. The American sculptor Felix de Weldon, who created the Iwo Jima Memorial, was hired to design a Malaysian version to serve as the National Monument commemorating the thousands of warriors and civilians who died defending the sovereignty of Malaysia against the Japanese occupation during World War II (1941-45) and during the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960). The sculpture was cast at a foundry in Rome at a cost of RM600,000. De Weldon was awarded the title of 'Tan Sri' for his efforts.
