Sultan Abdul Halim ascended to the throne on July 14, 1958, making 2008 the 50th year of his distinguished reign over the state of Kedah Darul Aman. He is a highly revered monarch in Malaysian history, notable for being the only Sultan to be elected twice as the country's Supreme King, or Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
