Pos Malaysia released the Herons & Bitterns stamp series in June 2015 to celebrate Malaysia's rich biodiversity and raise awareness about the preservation of native and migratory wetland birds. It highlights these birds' critical ecological roles in maintaining the health of the region's aquatic ecosystems.

Herons are freshwater and coastal birds belonging to the family Ardeidae. There are 64 recognized species worldwide. Some are called egrets or bitterns. There are around 19 species of this bird found in Malaysia. Herons are medium to large-sized birds with long legs and necks.
